Race 4 of the 2018-19 Season and Club Championship Race 1 for OK Dinghies. The race got underway from a scratch start off Snapper Island on the NE course, with the breeze from the ENE/E and a run-out tide. The line was heavily biased towards the committee boat end where James Bevis and Dave Haseldine gained an early advantage to lead up the first leg sailed mostly on a starboard tack.

The boats were closely grouped at the first mark and down the first run to the gybe mark off Spectacle Is. with Grant Wakefield sailing into the lead, closely followed by James Bevis, Dave Haseldine, Mark Rutherfurd and Bob Chapman, then Andrew Thyrd Jim Dwyer and Dave Swales.   Grant was a clear leader at the bottom mark with Bob moving into 2nd place after taking the ”low” option on the run between the islands, turning just ahead of Dave, Mark and James.

As the race progressed for the next windward/return, Grant continued to lead, Mark made-up ground upwind to sail into 2nd place with James, Bob and Dave mixing it up for 3 – 5th place, then Andrew, Dave and Jim, with the breeze flicking around to keep things interesting. The breeze filled-in for the final beat but still shifting around, with Grant and Mark getting a good jump ahead after turning at the top mark to go boat for boat downwind with the other three missing that opportunity but still in close touch. Grant turned first at the last mark for the short beat to the finish but it was Mark who took the honours at the finish by just 1 sec. James had a downwind dip to take the pressure off Bob and Dave.  Andrew was next to finish then Jim and Dave after unscheduled dips.

With thanks to the crew on the committee boat, the on-water support team and Carole Stephenson for the photos.
