“Drummoyne Hartley TS16’s win the Lake Macquarie Club Challenge trophy at Speers Point”

4 Hartley TS16’s from the DSC sailed in the Lake Macquarie Club Challenge at Speers Point on Sunday the 7/3/21 and “WON” the event, taking home the trophy.

The fun club team sailing event is hosted each year by the Speers Point Amateur Sailing Club for Hartley TS16’s. The DSC placing were – 2nd “Vinca” sailed by David Johnston & Russell Johnston, 3rd “Anette” sailed by Ron Johnston & Ben Johnston, 4th “Helen Joy” sailed by Chris Giaquinto & Keith Carter, 7th “Uncle Norm” sailed by Eric Partland and Gary Wills. Other sailing clubs that competed in the event were the Saratoga Sailing Club and the Speers Point Amateur Sailing Club.

A beautiful blue sky day with winds light to moderate winds. It was a handicap start on a South Easterly port rounding course, sailed at the northern end of Lake Macquarie.

Brothers David and Russell Johnston sailed a great race, considering it was their first time sailing Vinca. They were leading the last section of the race until near the finish line. The wind dropped away to nearly nothing as Vinca, Freudian Slip and Annette, in that order, approached the finish line. Freudian Slip gambled with poling out their jib and crossed the finish line a fraction in front of Vinca. With the Drummoyne boats taking 2nd, 3rd and 4th places this was enough points to win the Lake Macquarie Club Challenge It was a fabulous day to be sailing on Lake Macquarie at Speers Point and it was made even better by The Drummoyne Hartley’s taking out the Lake Macquarie Club Challenge.
